I, personally, recommend building a base in Spanish — basic grammar, sentence structure — using Spanish learning software, and then supplementing the lessons from the software with immersion techniques like when you were a child. How can you immerse yourself now? Simple — once you know some Spanish, simply find someone who speaks Spanish and talk to them in the language for an hour a day! It will be frustrating at first, but within a week, you will surprise yourself with the comfort you speak with. After two weeks, you’ll be blown away. After two MONTHS of this, you probably won’t even notice that you’re conversational!
Try reading a Spanish newspaper (with a good online translator) if you don’t have anyone to speak Spanish to. It doesn’t matter how you do it — just go out and find some way to force your brain to think and speak only in Spanish for one hour a day!
