What Love Island stars got in their GCSEs – genius Liberty and clever Millie

Piers Morgan once referred to all Love Island contestants as “brain dead zombies”.

But this lot prove he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and you can have brains and beauty.

While the Islanders might have a reputation for not being the sharpest tools in the shed, some of their exam results prove otherwise.

The villa has been home to doctors, scientists, government workers and engineers over the years, although there have been some questionable comments made over the years regarding geography and Brexit.

This series has been no different, with Lucinda getting into a muddle over flying to Spain and Toby claiming he “manifested” his shoe size using just the power of thought.

Some are packing some serious intellect behind their reality TV-honed bodies, while others were keen to crack on with just about anything other than their studies.

In honour of GCSE results day 2021, here’s a look at the grades some of the Islanders received.

Essex girl Millie is certainly not just a pretty face as she achieved some impressive results.

The 24-year-old has been studying a lot of chemistry in the Love Island villa, but her 8 GCSEs included an A in Maths and a B in Textiles.

That Maths GCSE certainly came in handy when she had to calculate the number of times Liam had kissed Lillie while he was away in Casa Amor.

Millie knows which newspaper is the best, as she went on to do work experience for the Daily Mirror in January 2013 within our fashion department.

The blonde bombshell went on to study Fashion Buying and Brand Management at Ravensbourne University in London – covering topics such as trend forecasting, visual merchandising, branding and promotion.

When she graduated in November 2018, Millie ‘Moo’ wrote: “It’s official graduating with a 2:1 in Fashion Buying and Brand Management. Who said blondes were dumb.”

Millie went on to have a very different graduation ceremony in the Love Island villa, one which her parents may not have wanted to sit through.

Liberty Poole

Despite claiming she is “ditzy”, Liberty is actually quite the clever clogs.

The 21-year-old actually mentioned her GCSE results during her introductory video before she headed into the Love Island villa.

Liberty was keen to point out that she has he “head screwed on” and few people know about her incredible exam results.

Before setting foot in the villa, Lib said: “Lads look at me and they think I’m this blonde but there’s a lot more to me. Not a lot of people know this about me but I got nine As and an A* at school.”

Liberty initially considered becoming a doctor and took two science subjects for her A-levels, but quickly realised it wasn’t what she wanted a career in.

On her LinkedIn, she wrote: “After leaving secondary school with 9As, A* and a B. So many people convinced me I should be a doctor.

“But after taking Chemistry and Biology as an A-level I started to lose enjoyment for those subjects. That’s when I started to explore other options and considered business and then marketing.”

Wanting to combine marketing experience with her passion for fashion, Liberty is currently studying Marketing at Birmingham City University and is “aiming for a First”.

She is working Nando’s while studying and is due to graduate in 2023 – but had a rather different graduation in the villa.

Aaron Francis

Not only did Aaron do well with his own GCSEs, but he was paid to help others with theirs.

It’s not known exactly what grades he achieved, but the 24-year-old Londoner started tutoring students in 2014 to help with their GCSE Maths.

“I believe that due to my success in GCSE Maths and my experience with young children, this is a very good job for me,” he wrote on his LinkedIn.

Aaron went on to take A-levels in Economics, Maths and Art before studying International Relations and Politics at University of Birmingham.

He had planned to have a career in finance but after doing a placement in his second and third year realised it wasn’t for him.

Aaron made the switch to working in luxury events and now mixes with the rich and famous.

Tommy Fury

Tommy Fury left school with no qualifications

Boxer Tommy Fury doesn’t have any GCSEs because he left school in Year Nine.

The series five runner-up proved Geography isn’t his strong point in the villa while doing a quiz with Molly-Mae and got confused when he left.

Tommy asked if he should go ‘left or right’ to London after leaving the villa – forgetting he was in another country.

“Oh s*** you have to get a plane innit? Jesus Christ I am so thick. I’m so thick it’s untrue,” he laughed.

What Tommy did leave school with is a charming personality and he went on to discover his boxing ability and is following in the footsteps of older brother Tyson Fury.

Molly-Mae Hague

That leads nicely on to Tommy’s girlfriend, Molly-Mae, who really is a smarty pants.

She did very well in her GCSEs, receiving an A in English and an A* in Sociology.

Rather than go into higher education, Molly ditched college to launch her online career with her YouTube fashion and beauty channel.

Things worked out pretty well for the influencer, who now has millions of Instagram followers and is raking in the money from all those clothing deals.

Chris Hughes

The wannabe rapper may have been the class clown of 2017, but it turns out Chris Hughes is actually a bit of a brainbox.

He’s got 14 GCSEs, including three A*s and eight As, and worked for a legal firm before entering the ITV2 dating show.

Chris even boasted about his academic excellence during a Twitter spat back in 2017.

“I’ve got 14 GCSE’s, a Uni Degree and morals. I ain’t sent s***, hence why all you’ll haven’t seen s***. Worry about yourself man,” tweeted the star student.

The photo of Chris lying in bed with his eyes open in the villa was transformed into a meme for students not being able to concentrate when revising.

Back in 2017, alongside the hilarious meme, he tweeted: “Good luck people. Always remember, Chris backs you!”

Kem Cetinay

Next up is Chris’ best pal Kem, who had an extremely tough time at school.

Essex lad Kem was struck down with crippling anxiety which impacted on his studies and led to him leaving school early.

“Anxiety can be a dark path if you don’t handle it well,” he told The Sunday Times Style magazine. “I’ve seen it first hand. I was taken out of school when I was 13, in year nine.

“People don’t know I didn’t finish school, that I was a different person to how I am now. I basically had therapy seven days a week for, like, three years.”

The much-loved Islander is now a TV favourite and has got into presenting.

Amber Davies

Amber was very vocal about her GCSE revision when she was preparing for her exams back in 2013.

The series three winner started off sounding very positive in March of that year, tweeting: “It’s official, my gcse revision has finally begun”

However, the mood had changed by April when Amber told her followers: “Snap chat is going to be the reason I fail my gcse’s. I know it”

By May, Amber revealed she had purchased a Β£1.99 PE GCSE app that she hoped was worth it.

It is not known exactly what Amber got, but she’s gone on to have a successful career on the stage.

She later revealed: “I remember being more bothered about the GCSE results party than actually receiving my results”

Camilla Thurlow

Camilla is one of the smartest contestants ever

Camilla is probably one of the island’s smartest ever contestants to enter the Love Island villa.

The 2017 contestant, who had a baby with fellow islander Jamie Jewitt, was working in Explosive Ordnance Disposal helping clear mines for the charity Halo at the time.

While her work baffled many of her fellow islanders, it was something she spoke passionately about during her time in the villa.

And Camilla is certainly a smarty pants, having scored a whopping nine A* GCSEs .

The brainy Islander went on to get straight As at A-Level and a First class honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science.

Hayley Hughes

Hayley Hughes went on Daily Politics

Hayley got a particularly bad reputation in the villa after demonstrating her lack of geography and politics skills.

The Liverpudlian model famously got slated for her vapid knowledge of Brexit – believing it meant cutting down all the trees and moaning it would be harder to go on her holidays (“I love me holidays!”).

Although Hayley was actually vindicated when an industry official warned we might miss our target to plant 11million trees in the next 25 years, so maybe she was inadvertently onto something.

She also got confused about an earlobe and claimed not to know what ‘superficial’ meant.

But her pal unmasked Hayley as a secret cleverclogs, revealing she’d actually scored three Bs at A level and studied Childhood and Youth Studies at Liverpool Hope University before dropping out to be an actress.

“She’s definitely not that stupid. I can’t believe no one else has said anything,” said the friend, who claims she bagged her Bs in ICT, Science and Health and Social Care at John Bosco Arts College in Liverpool.

“She did really well in her A Levels and GCSEs. She managed to get the grades to do that course, but she dropped out to pursue an acting career.”

Jess and Eve Gale

The Winter Love Island twins caused a stir when they rocked up in the South African villa with their platinum blonde locks and false eyelashes.

The pair were not happy with the boys for insinuating that they were ‘stupid’ because of their looks.

“We’re a lot smarter than people give us credit for,” said Jess while hitting back.

The twins claim to have bagged the highest grade in nearly all of their exams.

While Eve added: “Yeah, we basically got all A’s in our GCSE’s”.

Some of the nasty comments on social media got so bad that their dad Brian started defending his daughters, tweeting: “For the doubters. It is possible to be a girl, look really good, wear make-up, dye your hair blonde and still go to a good university.”

Eve studied geography at King’s College London, while Jess did psychology at University College London.

Scott Thomas

Scott Thomas starred in series two of Love Island

Scott’s results kept getting mentioned during his time in the villa in series two.

The brother of former Emmerdale star Adam Thomas and Corrie favourite Ryan Thomas earned himself four A*s and five As in his GCSEs.

Villa girlfriend Kady McDermott made a big deal of his school success on Love Island, claiming he thought he was smarter than her.

She was always muttering about his “three A levels” whenever she talked about him to the other Islanders.

Reassuring students getting their results in 2016, he tweeted: “Good luck with ur GCSE’s peeps! I got 4 A* 5 A’s and ended up throwing parties for a living and on Love Island! Who would have thought ey?”

*Love Island airs tonight on ITV2 at 9pm
