Top college football predictions for Aug. 28, 2021

One of the top college football picks the model is recommending for Saturday: Hawaii (+17) stays within the spread against UCLA in a 3:30 p.m. ET matchup at the Rose Bowl.

The Rainbow Warriors battled their way to a 5-4 mark in coach Todd Graham’s first year. The pandemic made scheduling and travel particularly challenging for Hawaii, but the Rainbow Warriors got their season underway on Oct. 24. After a 2-3 start, Hawaii won three of its last four, including an impressive 28-14 win over Houston in the New Mexico Bowl.

Chip Kelly’s offense took some steps forward in 2020, but UCLA went just 3-4 overall and dropped its final two games of the season. The Bruins also gave up almost 31 points per game.

Hawaii quarterback Chevan Cordeiro returns after throwing for over 2,000 yards and rushing for almost 500 last year. The model projects that he’ll throw for around 280 yards and rush for 30 more, helping the Rainbow Warriors stay within the spread more than 60 percent of the time.
