What is statistics?

You may have heard the term “statistics” tossed around in conversation, or you may have encountered it in a math or science class. But what exactly is statistics? To put it simply, statistics is the practice of collecting, analyzing, and presenting data in a way that makes it easier to understand and draw conclusions from.

Why is statistics important?

Statistics is an incredibly important field, used in a wide range of disciplines. Businesses often use statistics to make decisions about products, services, and operations. Scientists and researchers use statistics to analyze data and test hypotheses. Even journalists and politicians rely on statistics to back up their claims and provide context to their stories.

What are the types of statistics?

There are two main types of statistics: descriptive and inferential. Descriptive statistics summarize a data set by providing measures of central tendency (like the mean, median, and mode)

Supporting Early Literacy in Spanish and English

Supporting Early Literacy in Spanish and English

Building early literacy skills is imperative for all students, especially the five million English learners (ELs) being educated in today’s public schools.1 The mastery of these skills—including oral language, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and use of phonics—helps ELs develop the strong reading foundation needed for grade-level learning and success across all subject areas. Whether these early literacy skills are taught in students’ first languages or the target language of English, they are critical to ensuring students’ long-term success.

By the Numbers: The Need to Support ELs
Data shows Hispanic students experienced greater unfinished learning in reading, as well as math, over the last two years due to the pandemic. The Understanding Student Learning: Insights from Fall 2021 report found schools serving majority Hispanic students saw almost double the amount of unfinished learning in third-grade reading and math over these two years as compared to schools serving majority White students.

How To Teach A Great Lesson With Zero Prep

smart classroom management: how to teach a great lesson with zero prep

There is a way to teach a great lesson without preparation time.

But first, a caveat:

You must be an expert in your subject area. You can’t be an effective, compelling teacher if you don’t know your subject area well.

It’s our firm belief here at SCM that teacher ed. programs do an awful job preparing teachers for the reality of the classroom.

First and foremost is the lack of classroom management instruction and practice. A close second, is the disregard for content expertise.

While visiting classrooms, both are glaring weaknesses among many (many) teachers. The acceleration of student malaise and poor behavior since the pandemic has exposed this lack of training even more.

It’s the reason so many teachers are giving up. It’s why they’re complaining so vocally and assuming that there is nothing they can do about unmotivated and undisciplined students.

The reality is that they don’t

Career Leap Inspired by Love of Literature

Career Leap Inspired by Love of Literature

Online teacher certification opportunity made a teacher’s career leap possible. But it was a love of literature that inspired this teacher’s decision to enter the classroom.

American Board’s Teacher Graduate Spotlight

American Board graduate Pearl S. writes, “after twelve years staying at home with my own kids, I decided to make the career move as an adult to become a teacher”. Why, you might ask, was she willing to make this career leap? As Pearl explains, it can all be traced back to A Wrinkle in Time.

Pearl explains, “Madeleine L’Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time, once wrote about her favorite teacher, Miss Margaret Clapp, as one of the biggest influences on her young life. It was Miss Clapp’s first job teaching. She didn’t know it, but a young Madeleine skipped home one afternoon and called to her mother, “Mother, Mother, you ought to scold me for
