New Teachers – Should You Overplan Your Lessons?

The question is out: how many of you new teachers (1-5 years of teaching experience) in fact overplan your lessons? As a new teacher 12 years ago, I overplanned my lessons constantly in order to ensure that ALL students were engaged even if it meant restructuring the lesson.

In general, overplanning is a good habit to develop especially when they are used as back-up plans to support parts or even an entire lesson.

The problem however with overplanning becomes even more complicated and tricky during those unexpected moments. How do you know just exactly what activity to use? And for how long? How many activities? This is where experience and knowing the students and their abilities can play a strong role in deciding which activities are appropriate to use. Technical Writing Programs – Brooklyn College Technical Writing Program

There are quite a few certificate programs offered in the United States by different universities for those just starting out and considering Technical Writing as a career. In my honest opinion, a certificate is not necessary to make it in the technical communication field but it does not hurt either, especially if your resume does not include a list of prior tech writing jobs.

Brooklyn College is an educational institution that you can certainly consider if you’d like to earn a certificate in Technical Writing before you apply for a related job. Perhaps it’s not one of the biggest schools around but they offer a dedicated program made up of continuing-education courses.

To be eligible for the certificate, the students must take 8 classes, each $355 (at this writing) and each lasting 8 weeks. The whole program costs $2840.

• A book description. Smashwords requires a long and short description, so have both ready. (I usually combine the short and long descriptions in my Amazon publication).

• A list of seven keywords. I recommend checking Google to research common keyword searches used to for the type of book that you use. For example, “science fiction” is fairly broad and will probably put you on page 1,000,000,000 or lower. However, “alien invasion colonization” will narrow that down and put you higher on a search list – and yes, people do search that way. You’d be amazed at the keywords they use.

Geometry is one of the more interesting branches of math, given it’s visual aspect and the spatial reasoning challenge it poses to students. Learning geometry is certainly not as tough as learning algebra or calculus, for instance, but it does have it’s little challenges to keep students on their toes.

Students learning geometry learn how to calculate the area, volume, space, and perimeter of the common geometrical shapes. This involves memorizing a bunch of formulas for each shape and knowing when to use them. Geometry in itself is quite easy but questions can be tricky and are designed to test how students can manipulate the information they have to fit the given data.
